Michaela Reiser Senior Lecturer in Digital Media, London Metropolitan University.
The focus of her artwork is the experience of spaces. For the last years she has been researching the creative potential inherent in the virtual space. This includes art forms such as web art, Virtual Reality and interactive computer art.
"As a multimedia artist, I am conscious of an almost paralysing postmodern paradox in society: distance and immediacy, information overload and surveillance, 'global village' and fragmentation of society.
My work focuses on the interior space of dreams and hallucinations that challenge our understanding of perception and consciousness. To a degree we are still conscious of the 'self' and the surrounding world, but somehow transformed. We experience the defamiliarisation of the familiar, and our ordered world becomes unpredictable and uncontrollable. We feel powerless and horrified in this space with its own rules and mechanisms.
My work does not aim to simulate reality nor to escape into virtual fantasy worlds, but to focus on experiences in a postmodern society. I aim to create spaces that are dream-like in nature but not simulations."
Her work has been shown on-line and in international exhibitions. As a member of the artist group On Site she is currently involved in a long-term project focusing on the Kings Cross redevelopment. This Central London area is not only one of the last areas to be redeveloped, but Kings Cross is also one of the largest areas of urban regeneration and development in Europe. Michaela is developing artworks that are an enquiry into the radically changing social and built environment.
